First of all, we have been told for decades that the stock market is efficiently priced, investors bring no biases to the decision-making process, and price swings should be viewed as a risk. The harsh-sounding term, “volatility” was even developed to define these swings. However, none of this is true despite the fact they are still being taught.
Secondly, Wall Street acquiesces to this fodder by developing products layered with hidden fees and fraught with over-diversification, just to appease the “phantom boogie man” called risk. Like the arsonist who calls the fire department to put out the blaze he set, Wall Street firms view themselves as the knight in shining armor coming to the rescue, when in fact, they sit right in the middle of an ambiguous mess, churning out ever-confusing products that no one understands, and then points their finger at everyone else.
Lastly, around-the-clock coverage, interactive websites, and so-called expert coverage stoke the fires with information overload. Rather than cultivating clarity, this does little more than perpetuate investor confusion.
Instead, here is a simple four-step process to replace ambiguity with clarity.
So, don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees by allowing headlines to distract you from your bigger plan. The GameStop frenzy will be replaced by another sensational story, but the value of clarity is irreplaceable for today’s investors.
